Aptly housed in an old Southern Pacific Railroad caboose that was once used in the area, the newly opened 300-square-foot Truckee Railroad Museum is located next to the train depot and new California Welcome Center in the heart of Truckee’s historic downtown. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in commemoration of the first Transcontinental Railroad, which reached Truckee on April 3, 1868.
The museum includes mounted images, interactive displays, and railroad artifacts depicting the impact of the railroad on Truckee’s history.
Truckee is close to north shore Lake Tahoe and Reno. Excellent seasonal camping is available to the west via I-80 in U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in the Stampede Lake area or in RV parks to the east in the Reno area.
