Cougars threaten hikers in Bay Area

Two men hiking in the Bay Area's Pescadero Creek County Park escaped unharmed after being confronted by two mountain lions. The men swung a stick to drive the cougars away, then walked back to their car as the animals followed them in the distance. San Mateo County officials later put out calls to all residents in the vicinity of Loma Mar and La Honda, the settlements closest to the county park, and posted warnings.

Here is what to do if you are confronted by a mountain lion:
-- Do not approach the lion.
-- Do not run.
-- Raise your arms or open your jacket to appear larger.
-- Throw objects, wave your arms and speak firmly in a loud voice.
-- Pick up small children.
-- If attacked, fight back.
