See the monarch butterflies at Pismo Beach before they migrate

The Monarch butterflies that migrate each year spend a lot of their time at The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, the largest butterfly grove in California, where about 25,000 gather in the eucalyptus trees between November and February.

But hurry if you want to see them as they will soon migrate on. The Monarch Butterfly Grove is located in North Beach Campground just off Highway One in Oceano just south of Pismo Beach. While some monarchs can be observed feeding on low-growing plants or consummating their courtship on the ground, the vast majority are clustered on branches in the trees, so a spotting scope, binoculars, or a long-lens camera are useful for close up views.
