Santa Barbara rolls up RV welcome mat

Santa Barbara, California officials have drawn fire in what some view as pulling the welcome mat out from under RVers. After fielding complaints from businesses and art vendors about RVs blocking ocean views and tying up parking space, signs bearing the message: "No RV Parking" have popped up along Cabrillo Boulevard.

The actual no-RV zone will run the length of Cabrillo Boulevard from an area near East Beach to Castillo Street--and only along the ocean-side of the street. Violators can be ticketed for $48, and repeated violations can lead to an impound.

While business owners may be feeling a victory, according to a story posted on keyt.com, not everyone is happy with the decision. RV owner Carl Wagner raised an interesting point. Wagner told keyt, "There's no difference between my RV parked here or somebody in their van bringing their kids down and wanting to play on the beach for the day." Others suggest the move is aimed at discouraging the homeless from setting up shop in Santa Barbara.

Earlier the city had simply tried to ban RVs from the town by posting no RV parking signs at the edges of the city. A judge ruled the city was out of bounds with the effort, so specifying just where recreational vehicles are unwelcome is the latest in the city's arsenal.
